Influential world biologist Ján Vilček has become Honorary Doctor of the Comenius University

Bratislava, 28 January 2014: Today, Comenius University in Bratislava (CU) expanded its array of Honorary Doctors with another influential figure. Honorary degree doctor honoris causa (Dr. h. c.) was awarded to the world leading scientist prof. MUDr. Ján Vilček, PhD from the New York University at today’s ceremonial session of the Scientific Council of the Comenius University extended with scientific boards from the Comenius University faculties.

Ján Vilček, influential world biologist, immunologist and virologist, was born on June 17, 1933 in Bratislava. In 1957, he completed studies of medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of the Comenius University. In 1965, he emigrated to the United States, where he began to work at the Faculty of Medicine of the New York University. The results of his work have produced significant advancement in the treatment of arthritis and other chronic inflammatory diseases. His outstanding scientific achievements were also praised by the US president Barack Obama, who awarded him the National Medal of Technology and Innovation on February 1, 2013.

Award of the honorary doctorate by the Comenius University is an immense honor for me. Comenius University is my alma mater; as a graduate of its Faculty of Medicine, I graduated in this aula nearly 57 years ago. Thank you for this great honor, which I really deeply appreciate,”said Professor Vilček at the ceremony. 

Comenius University in Bratislava awards the honorary degree of Doctor honoris causa to domestic and foreign individuals, who have significantly contributed to the development of education, science, culture, democracy human values and personally contributed to the progress of human civilization by spreading education and humanism. “I am extremely pleased that it is exactly the same year when the Comenius University commemorates 95. anniversary of its founding, we award honorary – 115th – degree Doctor honoris causa to the world-class scientist, who (within our protocol rules) meets both our basic parameters of domestic and at the same time foreign figure of world importance,” summed up chancellor prof. RNDr. Karol Mičieta, PhD.

Ján Vilček, as of today Doctor honoris causa of the Comenius University, became another figure on the list of influential figures – Honorary Doctors of the Comenius University. These include e.g. former UN Secretary General Kofi Atta Annan (1999), 14th Dalai Lama and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Tenzin Gyatso (2000), or Nobel Chemistry Prize laureate Gerhard Ertl (2009).
