The Science Film Festival

The Science Film Festival was held for the first time in Slovakia within the framework of the nationwide Week of Science and Technology in Slovakia on 12 November 2014 on the premises of the Malá scéna Theatre, Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. Ceremonial opening of this unique festival was at 19:00.

About the festival
The Science Film Festival is organized by the Slovak Centre of Scientific and Technical Information (SCSTI), National Centre for the Popularization of Science and Technology in Society within SCSTI (NCP S&T). The event is held under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sports of the Slovak Republic. Slovak Centre of Scientific and Technical Information organizes the festival as one of the many activities within the project ‘Popularization of Science and Technology in Slovakia’. The event aims to highlight the science as a suggestive, dynamic and systematically expanding field.

prof. J. Turňa – príhovor na otvorení FVFOfficial opening of the festival was followed by the speech of prof. Ján Turňa, director general of the Slovak Centre of Scientific and Technical Information. In his short speech, he expressed the idea that he believes this tradition will continue in the following years, since it has been the first year of the Science Film Festival. Speeches were followed by screening of the movie HAWKING, which noticeably attracted participant’s interest. On the Science Film Festival, you can see also other interesting popular science movies, such as NIKOLA TESLA – TESLA, MASTER OF LIGHTING, GMO OMG, PORTRAITS OF SCIENTIST, SCIENCE SPECTRUM, etc. Festival visitors can expect rich program also in the form of discussions, where science supporters will have the opportunity to communicate with scientists and experts on various topics. The Science Film Festival runs until 15 November 2014.

Competitions
There are two competitions held within the Science Film Festival, namely competition for the best movie with the duration up to three minutes for young people on the topic “Science and Technology – past, present and future”; and competition for the best TV reportage about science and technology, which was broadcasted on television during the period 1 January 2013 to 30 September 2014. The awards ceremony of the competitions is going to take place on 15 November 2014 at 14:00 on the premises of the Malá scéna Theatre, Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. Prizes for the winners were provided by Slovenské elektrárne (joint stock company), a member of ENEL Group, which is a key partner of the Week of Science and Technology 2014.
