‘Extra fun with science and technology in practice’ is one possible description for the exhibition, which took place from 10 November to 11 November 2014.  Secondary title of the exhibition: Exhibition Showpieces Experiments; accurately reflects the intention of the organizers.

The two-day event was held under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sports of the Slovak Republic, as the main event of the Week of Science and Technology in Slovakia 2014, on the premises of the Slovak Centre of Scientific and Technical Information, Lamačská cesta 8/A in Bratislava

The idea of this event was to show the general public, especially to young people, research, development and innovations in practice. All the attractions from these areas were performed in an interactive, playful, yet informative way.

The event aims at the popularization of science and technology towards the public. Presentation of various experiments and showpieces presented this area in a way that is still unknown to the public. Through interactive science showpieces, the organizers also wanted to encourage young people to take an interest in science and technology around us and to studies of natural sciences and technology disciplines.

The presentation for the public was conducted:

  • In the form of interactive stands, focused on various areas of natural sciences and technology disciplines, in which showpieces were presented, experiments were conducted and exhibitions on the results of research and development;
  • In the form of poster presentation of projects, activities and institutions operating in the area of the popularization of science and technology towards the public;
  • In the form of static exhibitions about science and technology,
  • Via consultancy stands focused on various areas of the popularization of science and technology,
  • In the form of seminars, workshops, lectures, discussions, etc.

For example, SkyBean altimeter was presented, which is an innovative device from the workshop of the Institute of Electronics and Photonics, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. The size of this device even surpassed the size of commercial altimeters. Institute of Robotics and Cybernetics, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava has prepared a prototype of Slovak service robot MRKV, a prototype of spherical robot ‘Guľko’, flying quadcopter, but also controlling a robot using a virtual reality goggles, or other demonstrations of robotics. Institute of Chemistry of the Slovak Academy of Sciences presented electricity from the ‘live’ enzymes and practical demonstration of a biobattery. However, this all is just a small part of what visitors could see. The event was attended by over 20 exhibitors, who presented their activities.

Participants of the exhibition certainly stopped for a while at the stand with a poetic name ‘Singing Tesla Coil, RGB LED – mix your own color’; ‘Laser microscope’.

Quoting exhibitor, the Institute of Electronics and Photonics, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava:

How to get the lightings sing? Tesla Coil is going to demonstrate it in practice with a possibility to transform a given audio track into lightning discharges. The RGB LED diode shows, how the colors are mixed in the form of light. In this diode you can mix any color spectrum via suitable ratio of primary colors such as red, green and blue. We are also going to show what is hidden in the displays of mobile phones under the microscope.

Several unique inventions were personally presented by the scientists in Bratislava at the exhibition ‘Science unconventionally’. Models of the Slovak satellite skCube were not only very interesting, but also promising. They were presented by a group of enthusiasts, who are committed to the development of research and space industry in Slovakia. Slovak Organization for Space Activities is an institution that brings together these enthusiasts and it strives to make its way and represent Slovakia at the European Space Agency (ESA).

At the event ‘Science unconventionally’, you could, among others, find a rich side-program.

You could visit the poster section, interactive stands, lectures and workshops aimed at popularization of science and technology from the morning (9AM) until the evening hours (8PM). For the duration of the event, but also during the  whole ‘Week of Science and Technology’, you can also visit a panel exhibition devoted to Aurel Stodola and an exhibit of the best works enrolled to art and photographic competition on How science and technology have changed my life? For children and all those who have not ceased to be children, was opened exhibition ‘Scientific toy’.

Sponsors of the event: Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sports of the Slovak Republic; Slovak Centre of Scientific and Technical Information (SCSTI) – National Centre for the Popularization of Science and Technology in Society within SCSTI (NCP S&T).
