Science in the CENTRE – Nitra: Mathematics, nature, culture

Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Constantine the Philosopher in Nitra prepared another sitting with a cup of coffee with science figures for 20 November, 2014. Guest in the Science Café is going to be Prof. RNDr. Ondrej Šedivý, Csc. from the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Constantine the Philosopher in Nitra.

Prof. RNDr. Ondrej Šedivý, CSc. is a professor of mathematics and specializes in geometry and theory of teaching mathematics. He is a solutionist of several international and national projects oriented on the theory of teaching mathematics. He is also an advisor to fellows and PhD students. He was a longtime chairman of the Joint Study Board of Doctoral Studies in the field of Theory of teaching mathematics. He performed meritorious work as a chairman of habilitation committees in the appointment of professors as well as an opponent for dissertation, habilitation and inauguration works. He was a member of scientific boards at several universities. In terms of scientific research, he has a wide range of activities in the writing of the study literature. As the chief-composite author he participated in the creation of university textbooks and educational texts. As a part of the composite author team, he created a whole series of mathematics textbooks for primary and secondary schools. He participated in the organization of scientific seminars and scientific conferences. His work within the Union of Slovak Mathematicians and Physicists and organizing mathematical competitions is meritorious.

Content of the lecture
Nature as a source of models for mathematics. What do we want to get from mathematics? Explanation of the phenomena and patterns in the nature and prediction of certain occurrences. What is mathematics about? Its use, geometry and the language of the nature and arts.
