Students' Photonics Congress impressed students and teachers

15. 10. 2015

Photonics is a science discipline at the interface of physical and technical sciences that examines generation, transmission and detection of light and other forms of radiant energy. Laser developed possibilities of photonics by principal direction. Photonics supports the technology used in everyday life - smartphones, laptops, internet, medical devices or electronics. The 21 century will depend up photonics in the same way as the 20th century was depended up electronics. Also these information found out participants of Students' Photonics Congress 2015 organized by the International Laser Centre on 14. - 15.10.2015 in the premises of the Slovak Centre of Scientific and Technical Information of SR (SCSTI SR) in Bratislava. The event was held under the patronage of Juraj Draxler, the Minister of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of SR.

Študentský kongres o fotonike 2015

The premises of SCSTI SR, Lamačská cesta 8/A in Bratislava, visited primary school pupils and secondary school students during two days. On Wednesday, 14th October 2015, visited SCSTI SR pupils from the 6th - 9th classes of primary schools and students from 1st - 4th classes of eight-year secondary grammar schools in Bratislava region and on Thursday, 15th October 2015, visited SCSTI SR students from secondary schools and students from 5th - 8th classes of eight-year secondary grammar schools from all over Slovakia.

Workshops were focused on: Presentation of Photonics and its applications (GoPhoton! postgers, Smartphone applications for colour measurement, heart rate, etc.); 3D printing (SiProgs); Innovations in Photonics (GoPhoton! sets Explorer: solar energy, communications, principles of optics, etc.); Painting with light (GoPhoton!); Playing with light (Kvant): kits for schools, decomposition and composition of colours.

RNDr. Dušan Chorvát, PhD.Official opening ceremony of congress was accompanied by a laser show, which caught the attention of visitors without exception of age. The Deputy director of the International Laser Centre (ILC) ) RNDr. Dušan Chorvát, PhD. in his speech by a popular form explained and showed on examples, on what principles laser works. He invited visitors to the Open Day ILC which will take place in the International Laser Centre, Ilkovičova 3, Bratislava, Mlynská dolina, on Monday, 19th October 2015. For more information visit

Winners of the competition SUMACO talked about their unforgettable experiences from desert in Ecuador. Three students of gymnasium in Zilina - Denis Fitzel, Samuel Kriška and Matej Krajči - spend 32 days in the Biosphere Reserve SUMACO, protected by UNESCO.

Also impressive were the presentations of pupils´ and students´ projects, for example Observing of light bending, Decomposition of light and colour mixing, Spread of light, Rainbow, Indoor phenomena, Polar lights and many others.

In parallel with program for pupils and student was held also the workshop for teachers, in which were presented two presentations: Photonics and Photonics Toolkit (Photonics4All) Kit - educational tools for teaching photonics within physics and Applications of photonics (smartphone applications for colour measurement, heart rate, etc.).

Photonics4All is the European support project funded by the European Commission with the aim to promote photonics and technologies based on light among young people, businessmen and the general public within the European Union. Within this project will be developed several tools explaining the principles of photonics, its use and to encourage its study, for example Photonics applications, games and animated videos. To make photonics more popular, in addition to these tools will be organizes special activities for each target group: start-up challenges, activities for schools and children universities and others.

Študentský kongres o fotonike 2015

The aim of the Students' Photonics Congress was to deepen the knowledge of the visitors and arouse greater interest in photonics - a discipline of light. Workshops demonstrated the variety of the use of photonics. Practical applications of using light and experiments with lights, presentations of own participated students projects and also discussions and recommendations on possible perspective of professional development were benefits not only for pupils but also for teachers.
