18. 11. 2015

Children's portal DíkyMoc.sk together with the Slovak Centre of Scientific and Technical Information  of SR evaluated on Friday, the last day of TVT 2015, the first year of interactive inquiry, in which could anyone, aged under thirty years, vote for their action hero, thus scientist, inventor or innovator. How do children learn about the work of the scientist that they could give him their voice? We learned this from Martin Michalica, project coordinator.

Michal Katuška, presenter: "Seven Slovak scientists received the Golden Pip in Bratislava today. Awarded researchers are members of the Club of action heroes. If you do not know what I'm talking about, you have probably more than thirty years. Children's portal DíkyMoc.sk together with the Slovak Centre of Scientific and Technical Information  of SR evaluated the first year of interactive inquiry, in which could anyone, aged under thirty years, vote for their action hero, thus scientist, inventor or innovator. How do children learn about the work of the scientist that they could give him their voice? I ask Martina Michalica, project coordinator, sitting here next to me. Good evening."

Michalica Martin, project coordinator (guest in the studio): "Have a nice day. Good evening. Individual nominees scientists or scientific personalities have been introduced to young people in the form of video-profiles, in which we by combination of question that we thought they might be interesting for youth people, tried to portray scientific personality as an ordinary person who also has its heroes, its interests and we tried really to introduce these people and to show that heroes basically do not have to be only muscle men who can handle fight with some alien galaxies in the science fiction movie, but that they are people who instead of weapons use their brain and thus they can do great things."

Michal Katuška: "So can a scientist really be an action hero?"

Martin Michalica: "I am convinced about that, because  it alters the world of science fiction into reality."

Michal Katuška: "On what basis did those who voted chose? Those who won."

Martin Michalica: "It's hard to say, it would be necessary to ask voting youth. But I can personally subjective and based on my feeling say that it was such a very interesting group, individual scientists were from different fields of study, so it also map out their professional activity."

Michal Katuška: "From which fields of study? Who are these heroes?"

Martin Michalica: "So, if I can introduce, they are Professor Peter Moczo, who is a seismologist, docent Erika Halašová, who operates in the field of biology and medicine, then docent Katarína Mikušová, professor Karol Mičieta, Rector of Comenius University in Bratislava, professor František Novomeský, professor Michal Zeman and I do not know whether I have said seven names (+ Juraj Tóth)."

Michal Katuška: "So these are the heroes that children voted for. How many children did vote?"

Martin Michalica: "We were very positively surprised that in the first edition of the competition came over twelve thousand votes, which gives us a very interesting feedback that young people are interested in science and technology, and our aim was, among thus, the promotion of these scientific personalities, also to show to young generation, what is the real impact of work of those scientific experts on the normal everyday world that surrounds young people, because they do not always realize that it is the often even those scientists and researchers who change that their world at a more practical, more interesting, more secure and so on."

Michal Katuška: "So when you talk about the people who voted, because you say it has to have some impact, when someone who in twenty-nine years old give a vote, it will definitely give something back to, but we can say, that his life is somehow planned, while those younger ones are still may decide, so this is also your target audience?"

Martin Michalica: "Exactly, exactly, you summed it up perfectly. By this way, the aim is really to motivate the young generation and young people to think about that if they desire to have a job where they can apply their creativity, they can thanks to their profession travel all around the world, work with prominent personalities, so this could be the direction that they should be interested."

Michal Katuška: "From who could voting people choose from? How did they get to the names of those action heroes?"

Martin Michalica: "The scientific personalities had been nominated into inquiry by Slovak universities together with the Slovak Centre of Scientific and Technical Information  of SR and Slovak Academy of Sciences. Next, we asked nominated scientists and we made interesting interviews with them and video-profiles. And young people could on our portal called DíkyMoc.sk vote free of charge for their favourites from June to October."

Michal Katuška: "Could you even closer present your portal?"

Martin Michalica: "If I could say very briefly, it is that such educational and mentoring portal DíkyMoc.sk through which we realize just several educational projects for young people from different areas, but through which we also try to shape the direction, with which we would like to move."

Michal Katuška: "I read - very briefly in conclusion - that people can write there, but they can also consult with some those people, those experts. They are out there hanging onto that page. Are they willing to answer?"

Martin Michalica: "In particular, in many projects we already solve this by a form of online service, but as you mentioned, one part of the portal is actually such a mentoring system, where are personalities from different fields. And in fact, after a registration, young people have the opportunity to communicate with these personalities, whether they are looking for some possible such a soul mate who would be their guidance, or indeed if they are looking for some specific guidelines or valuable advice on how to carry on the best way."

Michal Katuška: "Maybe we succeeded in this with Martin Michalica¸ coordinator of the project, at this time. Thank you for coming."

Martin Michalica: "Thank you very much and I wish you a nice weekend."
