Science in CENTRE: Photonics or What we can Today with Light

Dušan Pudiš, PhD.We invite you to the scientific cafés called Science in the centre that the National Centre for Popularisation of Science and Technology in Society at CVTI SR organize for the general public in the Centre of Scientific and Technical Information SR (CVTI SR) in Bratislava regularly once a month.

The Slovak scientist, physicist, microelectronics and an expert on photonics prof. Ing. Dušan Pudiš PhD., from the Department of Physics at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Žilina, will come to the scientific café on February 26th, 2015 (Thursday) at 5:00 PM. The area of his scientific interest are photonic structures, technologies of their preparation and implementation of these structures into modern elements in optics and optoelectronics.

Photonics and what we can today do with the light is the title of the February Science in the CENTRE, of which will be the theme photonics as a relatively new scientific discipline, which has gradually been crystallized on a separate discipline. Photonics is based on the fundamentals of traditional disciplines such as optics and electronics. What the photonics brings nowadays and what role in it and also in our society plays the light, this will explain Professor Dusan Pudiš in his lecture.

The Light is the common denominator of new technologies that are increasingly promoted in energy savings in the form of new radiation sources based on light-emitting diodes (ie. LED) and in the renewable energy sources in the form of solar cells. The light penetrated into the field of medicine and living organisms, either as a diagnostic tool, or direct as a surgical tool in the form of lasers. The speed of light is already widely used for transmission of the information by optical fibre. In the 90´s, the first photonic crystal fibres and the first LED with photonic structure were produced. These exhibit unique properties and shift the potential for integration of optical components on the chip. These initiate the new discipline of science as nanophotonics on silica, which leads to the great miniaturization of optical and optoelectronic components and in addition with unique properties.

Not only the current year 2015 will belong to the light, because it is the international year of the light, but the long-term future comes out, where the technologies on the basis of the light will develop the society.
