Workshop at SCSTI SR: Popularisation and communication in Science

During 22nd – 23rd April 2015, the Slovak Centre of Scientific and Technical Information of SR (SCSTI SR) organized workshop PoPVaT I. with theme: Popularisation and communication in Science. This two-day event was organized by the National Centre for the Popularisation of Science and Technology in Society (NCP S&T) a department of SCSTI SR in cooperation with the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

RNDr. Pavol Siman, PhD., SAV

Mgr. Andrea Putalová, the managing director of the National Centre for the Popularisation of Science and Technology in Society at SCSTI SR, has opened the workshop. RNDr. Pavol Siman, PhD., a deputy of vice-chairman of the Slovak Academy of Sciences for the 1st department, gave a speech at the introduction of the workshop.

Five lectures were on the Programme of the first day.

Ing. Igor Lacík, DrSc.

Ing. Igor Lacík DrSc., the researcher in the field of macromolecular chemistry, kinetics and biomaterials and the managing director of the Polymer Institute SAS, introduced his presentation entitled The Experiences with Popularisation of Science from the perspective of scientists. Popularization of the science has become part of his professional life. When it comes to the popularisation of science, we try to make an understandable and an interesting "translation" of scientific results while maintaining completeness of the information. Science and education are key components of the cultural society that require real interest, strategy and financial support. Popularisation is a natural part of this process.

Mgr. Daniel Duriš

About the recommendations How to get more visitors from search engine Google? talked Mgr. Daniel Duriš, an expert in the field of search engine optimization Pizza SEO, s.r.o. He specializes in usability and accessibility of web sites, as well as statistical tools. During the presentation of the company, he has focused on working with the web, namely with the search engine Google and SEO optimization of web sites - focusing on the promotion of science and technology through these instruments. He devoted himself also to redesign of outdated web site, to editing capabilities of scientist´s own web pages, as well as the importance of simple and transparent web.

Andrej Salner

The next presentation on theme The Social Networks are not Science presented Andrej Salner, senior consultant of company  Pizza SEO, s.r.o., who specializes in creating online marketing strategies and optimization of web projects for search engines. He talked about the promotion of science and technology by social networks. He mentioned the reasons for the choice of social networks as "medium" to convey current information about research, as well as various benefits of social networking. On the exact examples, he presented the difference between activity of scientists and the scientific institutions abroad and in our country.

 

The presentation How to popularize Science in the Electronic Media presented Zuzana Vitková, the project manager and editor of the portal science.sk. She talked about the content of the web site and she gave some tips on how to effectively present research by media, so reader or listener will understand it. Research, that the public does not understand, is hardly accepted and has a much smaller effect on society, as the one, that scientist can explain in "simple language". The communication of scientists with the media is an important factor in an information of the public about recent progresses in science and research.

Mgr. Zuzana Čeplíková

The portal Science within reach introduced its editor in chief Mgr. Zuzana Čeplíková, head of Department of Electronic Media and Multimedia, the National Centre for popularization of science and technology in society at SCSTI. She reported that the portal www.vedanadosah.sk is building by SCSTI SR within the project PoPVaT. It is a new on-line environment for PR of Slovak science and technology, which constitute a compact field for the presentation of activities and institutions aimed at popularization of science and technology.

Also five lectures were on the Programme of the second day of workshop.

Mgr. Patrícia Stanová

The initial theme of the second day entitled Promotion of Science and Technology in Slovakia presented Mgr. Patrícia Stanová, head of Department of Promotion of Science and Technology, the National Centre for the Popularisation of Science and Technology in Society a department of SCSTI SR. She informed the audience about the activities of NCP S&T and about the surveys of promotion of science and technology that workers of SCSTI SR have implemented in 2013 and 2015. The target group were pupils of primary and secondary schools, the general public and the scientific community.

Mgr. Martin Hajduch, PhD.

The presentation From The New York Times to SME - my story presented Mgr. Martin Hajduch, PhD., senior scientist and Head of the Department of Reproduction and Developmental Biology at the Institute of Plant Genetics and Biotechnology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. He introduced on his own experiences with promotion of science and research and on specific examples several important factors that determine whether the research will be published or rejected. He also discussed about so-called "impact factor" of scientific journals and formulation of research in an interesting and readable text, which will not lose on its quality and its importance of choosing the appropriate research for the promotion.

Martin Maruniak

With the theme How to popularize the science impressed Martin Maruniak, journalist, consultant, trainer, coach. In his presentation he was devoted to communication and in relations with media. He talked about the most effective methods and forms of presentation of activities and research results through communication channels. He noted that if scientists want to attract with the report about their project or research results, it is important that their information stand out among others. He also advised the best way to address the media and he explained in detail the rules when writing press releases and invitations.

Mgr. Alena Bachratá

With themes How You can possibly attract pupils' interest in their free time? spoke Mgr. Alena Bachratá, student PhD. at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics at Comenius University. She introduced correspondent seminars and explain how they work. She performed a particular task of the theory of probability, which has been solved by students of the second grade of primary school. She introduced different approaches of students to solving and discoveries that they were able to establish themselves. She pointed out the impact of "math by game" for future education, selection of career and overall mindset of children.

doc. Ing. Ľubica Stuchlíková, PhD.

The workshop concluded inspiring presentation Mysterious world of science and technology, which was presented by doc. Ing. Ľubica Stuchlíková, PhD., a teacher from the Institute of Electronics and Photonics at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. She pointed out the current state of education in the field of science and technology in primary, secondary and high schools. She riveted attention to the factors that affect the choice of career. It is important to look for new ways of motivating pupils in primary and secondary schools to increase their interest in studying technical and scientific disciplines. She also provided an overview of available popularisation activities in Slovakia.
