Michael Londesborough

Who is Dr. Michael G. S. Londesborough B.Sc Hons Ph. D.?

Dr. Michael G. S. Londesborough B.Sc Hons Ph. D. is a British scientist. He works at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague. He was born 27.1.1978 in London England. He graduated with a first-class degree in chemistry at the University of Leeds, England in 1999 and he became a degree Ph.D. Since 2002, he has been working on a research in Prague, where he also lives. In 2014, he has reached a great success in his research; he managed to discover in collaboration with Spanish scientists a unique laser based on boranes. He is a three times winner of the Czech/Slovak young inorganic chemist award, he is also involved in various projects in collaboration with the British Council in Prague, in popularization projects of The Czech Academy of Sciences, the Czech Television and the National Technical Museum. He is interested in the promotion of science for public, the teaching of young people and the networking of young scientists from the UK and the Czech Republic. In 2009, he has been awarded with the Vojtěch Náprstek Medal given by The Czech Academy of Sciences for results in science popularization. Between 2011 and 2014 he was also awarded for results in science popularization by The Czech Academy of Sciences.

Michael LondesboroughScientific show of Michael Londesborough prepared the National Centre for the Popularisation of Science and Technology in Society a department of the Slovak Centre of Scientific and Technical Information of SR within the project PoPVaT - Promotion of Science and Technology in Slovakia.  On 28th April 2015, Michael Londesborough presented two phenomenal scientific shows. The has started the first series of these shows. He introduced himself at the premises of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava (Aula of prof. Kneppo).

He demonstrated linking of his knowledge with practice in his experiments. Show The Secret of Energy was intended mainly for secondary school. In this theme Michael explained, what energy actually is, what origin it has, how it is spreaded out, how we can tame it for our own needs and whether the production of energy must have a negative effect on the environment.

At the beginning of "lectures" we looked up film about the creation of the universe. However, none of the visitors still had no idea what would follow. What did Michael prepare for us? Breathtaking experiments. from audience came sporadically shouts of scare. From the experiment with an apple attached to a string, in which he explained the gravity, overcoming the gravitational force, he fired from an oxygen-hydrogen bazookas in the room and in the Aula also resonated on several occasions explosions that a short time deafened the audience.

There is no doubt that Michael is primarily a respected scientist. At the same time, he is excellent in showing complicated topics in simple way. Do not expect exhausting, upsetting, information saturated lectures on the show. Michael can "make a fool" of science. The proof is his statement that "oxygen is a beautiful girl who is not too picky".

The second scientific show with specific name Spies, rocket fuels, drugs and microelectronics: the amazing chemistry of boranes! was organized for university students and specialized public. Do you ask, what are the boranes? The answer to the question is probably familiar to all visitors of the event. Boranes are compounds consisting boron and hydrogen. However, visitors have also a knowledge about the first century of their research (full of espionage), a mysterious rocket fuels, semiconductor, microelectronics. Michael said that at the end of the lecture, he wants us to become "experts on boranes."

If you did not participate on the show, do not despair. Both scientific shows will step by step present in every region of Slovakia. Next time, on 12nd May 2015m Michael Londesborough will present his show in Žilina, in the premises of the University of Žilina. (Aula no. 5, 1 Univerzitná 1). For more information about the event and registration, please visit www.ncpvat.sk section Promotion events.

At the end we can say, as Michael would say: "good chemist is active chemist!"
