Science in CENTRE - Summer Special: New steel = lighter and safer cars

06. 07. 2015

Dr. Ing. Daniel KrižanYoung successful Slovak scientist Dr. Ing. Daniel Križan will come to present new perspectives of old good steel to the Science Café called the Science in CENTRE - Summer Special on Thursday, 16th June 2015 at 05:00 PM. He is a recognized expert in material engineering. He is the head of the research team for the development of high strength steels for the automotive industry in the steel company voestalpine Steel Division GmbH in Linz, Austria. He has invented several new types of steels with TRIP effect, he holds five worldwide patents.

Increasingly stringent regulations for the discharge of CO2 emissions in passenger transport, downward pressure on prices and increasing overall vehicle safety met with a veritable explosion in the development of new types of steel that are designed specifically for the automotive industry. Development of steel in recent decades is progressing by leaps and bounds. In order to meet demanding requirements for the construction of cars in competition with alternative lightweight materials, such as composites and alloys based on aluminium and magnesium, a priority objective in the development of steel has become increasing their strength.

The lecture will convince you that old good steel, that mankind uses for several millennia, certainly does not belong to the "old iron" because it still has the best potential for improvement. We will learn that the steel should not be linked only with the dirty production and heavy industry, but their development is literally nanotechnology, because its properties are targeted to affect atomic level using the latest experimental methods. The development of new kinds of steel clearly in practice mainly used the research results, which respect environmental protection, also with a focus on improving the safety of human life in cars in dangerous accidents.

We invite you to the Science Café called the Science in the CENTRE, that the National Centre for Popularisation of Science and Technology in Society a department of SCSTI SR organize for the general public in the premises of the Slovak Centre of Scientific and Technical Information of SR (SCSTI SR) in Bratislava. Once a year, in July, we prepare the Summer Special of the Science in the CENTRE and we invite young researchers who are famous also abroad thanks to their scientific work. If you want to learn more, you can join the discussion in an informal and friendly atmosphere with a coffee. The Science Café the Science in the CENTRE takes place in the premises of the SCSTI SR at Lamačská cesta 8/A, Patrónka, in Bratislava. Admission to the event is free to the public.
